Social Change and Richard Scarry’s Best Word Book Ever

An anonymous reader sent us a link to Alan Taylor’s flickr set, where he documents shifts in a children’s book, Richard Scarry’s Best Word Book Ever, between 1963 and 1991.
… they made several changes regarding gender. Dad now helps with meals …

I grew up reading these books and thought that if I were ever a mom or just a darn great aunt I’d want to pass along this type of material to young readers. I even went so far as to grab a few bilingual editions on ebay (both my ebaying and my planning ahead are staggering). Richard Scarry’s soft textual and pictorial adaptions more befitting of modern society make me love his work even more.
And I swear to God that momma bunny is smiling bigger now.
Check out the Flickr set of changes. It’s pretty awesome.
